July webinar shines spotlight on innovation
In the July webinar, “Innovation: Whose Job Is It Anyway?,” Michael discussed three types of innovation and how every IT professional can step up and speak up with ideas to do things better across the organization.
The three types of innovation revolve around what is brand new, what is new to us, and what is an improvement to the way things are currently done.
Some staff are dedicated to scanning the horizon for new technologies that are emerging and determining how they could be harnessed for teaching, research or service. Additionally, a larger pool of staff may learn how other higher ed institutions leverage technologies for their students and faculty through attending conferences, reading educational journals or having discussions with peers, and then advance those ideas for use at Penn State.
Much innovation, however, comes from staff who elevate ideas to solve problems they or their teams deal with on a regular basis. Being tuned in to potential improvements that could have an impact, and then sharing those ideas with a manager, can lead to real change.
Michael shared a quote by Steve Jobs that summarizes the importance of IT professionals all being forward-thinking: “It doesn’t make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do. We hire smart people so they can tell us what to do.”
